In the medieval ages, blacksmiths played a crucial role in crafting various items such as household objects, weapons, and armour, making them highly esteemed members of society who often held leadership positions. Their craftsmanship relied on advanced technology for that era and persisted until the Industrial Era when machinery and mass production led to the decline of their trade.

The Old Nottage Forge during 1800s

The Smithy - over 400 years old

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the parish of Newton Nottage, had several blacksmith artisans and historical records show the presence of multiple blacksmith forges. Today, Nottage Forge is the last remaining smithy in this ancient parish, situated at the intersection of Locks Lane, South Road, and Fulmar Road, Porthcawl. Originally a blacksmith and farrier's base until 1975, it has since transformed into a wrought ironwork business run by Ockert Booyse and is believed to be over 400 years old.

Ironwork - known for its timeless beauty

Wrought ironwork is a specialised craft that involves shaping and manipulating wrought iron, a tough and malleable material, into intricate and decorative designs. Skilled artisans use traditional blacksmithing techniques, such as forging, hammering, and welding, to create various functional and ornamental objects. These include gates, railings, fences, furniture, lighting fixtures, and various architectural elements. Wrought ironwork is known for its timeless beauty, durability, and the unique artistic flair it adds to historical and contemporary settings. It continues to be appreciated for its craftsmanship and the ability to infuse a touch of elegance and craftsmanship into everyday surroundings.
